Robert Aramayo Wins BAFTA for Powerful Performance in I Swear

I Swear - Robert Aramayo

Robert Aramayo, the English actor known for roles in Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, achieved a career‑defining milestone after winning Best Leading Actor at the 2026 EE BAFTA Film Awards for his portrayal of John Davidson in the critically acclaimed drama I Swear.

The film, directed by Kirk Jones, tells the true story of Davidson — a prominent campaigner for Tourette syndrome awareness — and Aramayo’s performance has been widely praised for its emotional depth, authenticity, and sensitivity.

A Night of Historic Wins

Aramayo’s BAFTA victory was one of the biggest surprises of the evening, as he triumphed over major Hollywood names including Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael B. Jordan, Timothée Chalamet, Ethan Hawke, and Jesse Plemons.

In addition to winning Best Leading Actor, Aramayo also received the EE BAFTA Rising Star Award, making him the first performer in BAFTA history to win both awards in the same night.

Visibly emotional, Aramayo expressed disbelief during his acceptance speech, telling the audience:

“I honestly cannot believe that I have won this award. I really, really cannot.”

He went on to thank director Kirk Jones, casting director Lauren Evans, producers Molly Cowan and Danny Streisand, and the individuals he met while researching the role.

A Role That Resonated Deeply

Aramayo’s portrayal of John Davidson required extensive research into Tourette syndrome and the lived experiences of those affected. The actor has spoken about how profoundly the role impacted him, calling Davidson “the most remarkable man I’ve ever met.”

The film itself was nominated in multiple categories and also won the BAFTA for casting.

A Journey Shaped by Training and Influence

During his speech, Aramayo reflected on his time at The Juilliard School in New York, where actor Ethan Hawke once delivered a talk on longevity and protecting one’s craft — advice that left a lasting impression. Aramayo described sharing a category with Hawke as “incredible” and deeply meaningful.

A Breakthrough Moment for a Rising British Talent

Before I Swear, Aramayo was best known for playing young Eddard Stark in Game of Thrones and Elrond in Amazon’s The Rings of Power
